Projects

Dormitory

The latest building to be funded by the charity is a dormitory for the youngest children who have, up until now either shared with the older children or slept in an old classroom.

CUSAFE funding

Early in 2010 the trustees of the Aquinoe Learning Centre Charitable Trust, along with members of other charities, were invited to attend a meeting with representatives from the SAFE (Southern African Fund for Education) committees of the various colleges at Cambridge University.

Library

The trustees are in the process of submitting another application for funding towards a new library building for the Aquinoe Learning Centre.  In the last year, a large number of books have been provided for the school and these need to be housed in a decent-sized building, erected for the purpose.

Future Projects

The trustees, along with another supporter, have spent a substantial amount of time in the last few months investigating new projects for Aquinoe in the coming months and researching possible methods of funding some of these.

Having been presented with a considerable amount of money for books, we decided that funding for a library building would be one of the priorities. Other means of acquiring books have also been probed.

Another idea is the acquisition of land on the outskirts of the town. A large amount of money is spent on food each term but if crops could be grown on school land, this would perform several functions:

Resource Centre

For several years, Josphat's biggest dream has been the building of a resource centre at the school for the children with disabilities. This, however, would have cost a great deal and therefore would have taken the charity several years to be able to fund.

When Tina and Jean visited the school in April 2007, they met someone who explained about the Kitchen Table Charitable Trust (KTCT)

On their return, they investigated and found that the KTCT had been set up by John Humphrys to help small charities just like the ACL, particularly in Africa. It took many months to prepare a suitable bid, and this was sent off in April 2008.

Dormitory

In December 2004, the boys’ dormitory was in a terrible state, and really needed replacing. We could not afford to give anywhere near the amount required to do this so, in the short term, sent enough for temporary renovations. The cardboard ceiling was painted, along with the window frames, the outside walls were whitewashed and the floor was cemented.

Clearly this was not satisfactory, and government officials had warned the school authorities that the building was not of a good enough standard, and would need major repairs, or a replacement.
