Teresa has a very poor background.

Teresa belongs to Turkana tribe. These people are traditionally nomadic and come from the drier areas of North Eastern Kenya. Normally the girls are not educated. Her parents live as squatters on a farm in Kitale. Teresa is very bright but, being a girl, was kept away from the school until she was sponsored.
